How to Earn an (uncapped) Income Online in 2025

Why I Chose to Set Up an Online Business

I'll never forget the call from my neighbour. She’d just seen my little girl run out into the road, while the au-pair was on her phone. I knew I couldn’t wait a day longer. My time in the military was nearly over, but I vowed to always be the one holding my girls hands from then on. And I never wanted, to ever again, have to ask a boss for time off to share in the milestones of their development.

I knew that I had to find a way to work from home and provide a better life for my family without sacrificing those precious moments with my girls. What followed is a very long story of numerous failures at MLM businesses and a coaching business that cost me more to run than I made! I reached a meltdown as I felt trapped in a relentless cycle of daily chores and ‘work’ obligations. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone, but I was determined to create my own success - maybe that's why you are here too?

Back then, I had no idea about earning an income online. I reckon even if I did , I would have dismissed it as too techy. In fact, it was really techy back then, but these days it all SO much easier for just about ANYBODY to learn and apply the skills given the right training (and if you can cut & paste, you're half way there!). This is my journey to learning the digital skills that have allowed me to make my living online and I'd love it to be yours too.

How 12 Minutes Can Change EVERYTHING!

The world has changed SO MUCH (you might have noticed?!!), and with it, the old assurances of traditional employment have dwindled. Relying solely on one source of income these days is too risky and for most people it just isn’t enough to cover all their needs, let alone their desires.

I’d started to realise I could take my coaching business online, but having invested in numerous ‘shiny objects’ I realised there was so much more to it than many 'gurus' would have you know. After failing to achieve any kind of success and being overwhelmed by the tech and the apparent need to ‘splash myself all over social media’ I was ready to give in ‘and get a proper job’ (my family could see my desperation and thought this would be best for me).

The thing is, I just knew there must be a way to make it work. It looked to me like there were far less ‘intelligent’ (maybe harsh, but that’s what it seemed) people making a lot of money online.

Surely there was something I could do?

Sometimes it’s only when our backs are truly against the wall that we develop the grit needed to push forward. I’d seen some ads for some free training that I’d figured were too good to be true, but what if I actually started watching some of these? Ultimately, I dismissed many, they just didn’t feel right (I’m a big believer in gut instinct), but there was one training that stood out.

It was short and pulled no punches.

In 12 minutes, I knew I was in the right place. There was no promise of overnight success, of making millions in the first month or showing me how to be some kind of influencer. It introduced a Mission Map that would allow me to chart a path that was unique to me, my values and my passions.

I learned that the secret was all about putting in some hard work 'up front', setting up automated systems, that then created income 24/7.

It showed me how people that are earning an income online are leveraging digital assets and building systems that generate revenue round the clock. It showed me how I could start a side hustle or set up a business that could earn me more than I ever had in the Royal Air Force (which has now happened!)

I learned that with the right step-by-step guidance, but with no ideas, being rubbish at tech and with limited time, I could build a successful online business that I was truly passionate about. And not only that, I’d be joining a community of likeminded souls around the world doing the same and supporting each other through the journey.

I knew it was time to push away from the wall, stop the pity party and get to work. I felt in my bones I had found the answer and I set about designing the fulfilling life I now have. It's not been plain sailing, I've failed forward over and over, but I knew I wasn't going to stop until I had my own successful online business. And along the way I’ve been able to be the mum I always wanted to be and that my girls needed. I never missed a school play, a family assembly or a sports day.

Here's How I Did It

After that 12 min intro, I invested in the business building course that covered EVERY type of online business. I’m still following my ‘mission map’ to create multiple income streams for long term security. Full disclosure, this is my journey and I’m still in the trenches building some of these, but having discovered Affiliate Marketing early on, and starting there, I have a regular online income while I ‘play’ with other revenue streams!

1. E-commerce Store

I’ve used the training to build an Etsy store for my health and fitness businesses. Leveraging the power of digital assets, drop shipping and Print on Demand technology so I don’t have to keep or send any products myself.

What passions might you be able to create a store out of?

2. Online Courses & Coaching

I’m turning my old coaching business into online courses. I’m loving creating the content that I know has the power to help people lead healthier, stronger lives. And through the education and coaching I invested in, I know how to properly and effectively market myself this time round!

3. Freelance Services

Using the numerous skills I have acquired while going through the education I invested in, I now have ‘in demand’ online skills that I’ve used to generate occasional freelance income.

I never believed I could learn so much Tech stuff at my age, let alone use it to generate income!

4. Affiliate Marketing

This is where it all started for me. This largely passive income stream was crucial, as it brought in money even when I was busy with family commitments. I wanted to get going quickly without having to create my own products. It’s where many new online ‘entrepreneurs’ cut their teeth. Many actually stay here, because when you know how to market ‘high ticket’ products that offer thousands in commission, why not?!

5. Books

I NEVER imagined I’d be an author, but leveraging the power of AI, the ‘e-commerce’ training and Amazon’s Print on Demand service, I’ve just brought out my second ‘low content’ book!

6. Membership Businesses

Lastly, with the help of the coaches, I’m working on 2 new monthly subscription services, based around my healthy, happy habits coaching and nutrition content.

This will provide a steady, predictable income and give me the satisfaction of curating products that really spark joy in me.

Is this ‘online life’ for you?

Intro: Who am I, why should you care?!

How Affiliate Marketing took me from being a Broken Ex-Military Mum to a Successful Multiple Online Business Owner.

I'm Jennie, and my family are the reason I'm here. I'm a real mum, running a real business, earning a good income - but it's been a real journey (feel free to skip this bit, if you're just here for the info!!)

I served in the Royal Air Force for nearly 23 years before leaving to focus on being a mum. I still wanted to work - we did have a mortgage to pay, but knew I didn’t want to have to ask a boss for time off when my girls needed me.

My au pair had been the one who was there for school performances and sports days, you don't get those days back - it was my turn to be there and I figured being self-employed was the only way to do that. I had a big passion for fitness so after re-training, I launched a PT and post-natal bootcamp business.

Then Life Happened

I scraped by for a few years and was able to be the present (albeit mostly broke!) mum I’d hoped to be, but then things at home changed. Too long for this article, but over a 5 year period we moved house 4 times and I suffered a big injury.

My fitness business bit the dust and my mental health went down hill as I struggled to rehab my injuries and keep the family together through the chaos. Through our moves, I’d tried to take my fitness business online, but as I was AWFUL with tech and not a huge fan of social media, I just couldn’t get it going.

I simply didn’t have knowledge to build the courses and sites, the skills to market it, and the ‘following’ to be seen and that left me with little energy or time to actually deliver my ‘stuff’!

Towards the end of this period as we began a renovation job on our latest home, I came across some training showing complete beginners how to work online. The free intro course I stumbled across showed me I didn’t need any tech knowledge, and there was no selling my soul on social media and I could start completely from scratch, with no ideas of my own.

So (with some scepticism at first!) I decided I had nothing to lose by checking it out and ultimately investing in some education that at the very least, would improve my skillsets. I followed step-by-step training to build an Affiliate Marketing business, and I LOVE IT! It’s been hard work, but it’s been the most rewarding (mentally and financially) thing I’ve ever done. I can fit my working schedule around the family and take days or weeks off at a time knowing that the systems I’ve put in place work for me 24/7.

Life today

I’m earning more money than I did as a military officer and that is increasing month on month as I improve my skills and re-invest in mentors and more advanced training. And you know what, now that this is working, I’m using these skills to rebuild my fitness business in a whole new way (and I can now afford to pay others to do the tech stuff – which I can do myself now, but prefer to spend time with my family instead!!)

I just wish I’d come across an article like this YEARS AGO.

Anyway, that’s enough about me for now, let’s get to the nitty gritty….

1. What Actually is Affiliate Marketing ?

Affiliate Marketing is BIG BUSINESS - it hit $8.2 billion in the U.S. alone by 2022.

It's a goldmine for anyone prepared to do some work - is that you?

The basics...

When was the last time you had a great meal out?

Did you recommend that restaurant to friends and family?

Did they try it out to?

Ace – you’re halfway there.

Now imagine that you’d asked the owner for a code word specific to you. Now every time your friends have a meal and use that code word when they book, the owner would give you a % of their bill and it wouldn’t cost your friend any extra money at all. This commission-based business is how affiliate marketing works. The owner is reaching new clientele through you that they have not had to market to themselves.

Now take this idea online.

You’ve used a fantastic service or product (physical or digital) and you’d like to shout about it.
You ask the business owner for a unique code embedded in a hyperlink (an affiliate link).
You promote the product/service through various channels using that link *(we will come back to this bit, it’s the part nearly everyone gets wrong!)
You get a payment, every time someone buys the product through your link.

Not every business has an affiliate programme, but increasingly more do as they see the value in this way of getting their products and services seen by a wider group people.

No Control over the Product: As an affiliate marketer, you don't have control over the product or service you're promoting. This means that if the product doesn't meet the customer's expectations, it can reflect poorly on you as the affiliate marketer. It’s therefore important to pick your products carefully.
Commission Cuts: Some companies may reduce the commission rate for their affiliate marketers over time, which can impact your earnings potential. It’s essential you work with an established business that looks after it’s affiliates and has clear guidelines.
Fluctuating Income: Your income as an affiliate marketer can fluctuate depending on the performance of the product you're promoting, changes in the market, and other factors. So again, you need to choose companies you trust and that perform well.

(Happily, there are MILLIONS of companies and when you align yourself with several that you love, you’ll have multiple income streams.)

Who can you trust to help you?: If you look on just about any company website, you will see the option to become an affiliate. It doesn’t cost anything to join, but then what? Great if you have thousands of followers, and a good understanding of how it all works, but what if you don’t?

Trusting your gut

Like me, you may have already been down numerous rabbit holes trying to work it all out, or bought books on how to make it work, and still be left overwhelmed. I wanted to build a profitable business to pay off the mortgage and to give my family ‘experiences of a lifetime’, every year and not just promote a few links on social media for pennies.

Also, many companies, especially if they are new to this, offer poor returns, no resources for their affiliates and no support, leaving you floundering.

This is important to me.

Growing up in a military family (that's me at 20 years old with family - my RAF Dad and retired Grandad!) and serving my country for 23 years, integrity is a word I live by and I do my best to surround myself with people who have a similar moral compass. As we’ve already touched on, so many people are out to make a quick buck and have no qualms ‘over promising and under delivering’.

My 2 Integrity Tips -

Be a 'product of the product' - I would never market something I hadn’t used and that hadn’t made my life better. So this is where it starts for me and it should do for you too. Only promote services and products where you are a ‘product of the product’. I want to be able to talk openly and honestly about something I have personal experience with, like the courses I ultimately invested in to learn how to be an Affiliate Marketer in the first place. (Once I had checked out the free introduction course that you too can access on the buttons in this article, it didn’t take long to realise I was in the right place).

Focus on your passions - What is it you love to do? Are you a keen cyclist, runner, reader, photographer, cook, entrepreneur, swimmer, movie go’er, knitter or animal lover? Are you passionate about the environment, politics, community, travel, outdoors, charity or family? With the right training, these are all things you can build your own online or affiliate business around.

You’ll soon be able to spot the insincerity of affiliate marketers who are just out there trying to promote high ticket products they have no interest in or have never tried!

7. Who's on your Team?

One of the biggest blows to me when I left the military, was the loss of camaraderie. One minute I was surrounded by go-getting, intelligent, great humoured and generally like-minded souls. The next minute I was a ‘solopreneur/mumpreneur’ alone and talking to myself! Yeah, there were some lovely mums I would meet in the playground (several of whom tried to get me into their MLM/network marketing businesses; tried it, hated it!), and my clients of course, but when it came to running my business, it was a pretty lonely place.

Finding my tribe

I invested thousands of pounds in courses and coaches and would briefly engage with some others on a similar path, or meet people at an in-person event, but I never felt I belonged anywhere and the engagement just never felt sincere. I’ll stop there before the violins break out, but what I wanted to stress is that working online can be a lonely place without a ‘tribe’.

Aside from the quality of the education, the coaches and the support, what has kept me in this current community for years now, is the people. People from all over the world creating businesses they love. People who want to spend more time with their families, people who want to give more back to their communities, high-fliers who want a new direction before (and after!) burn-out, and people who have stacked shelves and driven ubers to fund their learning for a new online life.

I love this community. My tribe of like-minded souls from every walk of life, at every age and stage of life, and from every corner of the globe, provide an unparalleled camaraderie borne from our shared journey’s into the online space.

10 Businesses that will leave you Exhausted, Stressed & Broke and What to do Instead.

Starting a small business from home sounds like the dream, right? But so many aspiring entrepreneurs, especially parents wanting more time with their kids, jump into businesses that often turn those dreams into a nightmare sitcom! They end up with LESS time, LESS Money, and MORE Stress than their 9-5.

I’m going to jump into some legitimate business ideas that might look easier from the outside than they are once you dive in (and believe me, I know, I’ve tried several!) So before you convert your living room into an office, shop, storage hub or massage parlour, or invite strangers to have breakfast with you, let's talk about the mistakes other well intentioned parents make, so you don’t have to.

You’ll also see the ‘mumpreneurial’ journey that I embarked on when I left a successful 22 year military career to be there for my girls. This included failing at 3 MLM businesses, failing at online PT coaching and failing at influencing!

10 businesses to avoid if you want to keep your sanity, your time and your savings!

1. MLM - Multi-level Marketing/Network marketing.

Don’t get me started on this! I’ve tried and failed at 3 ‘failproof’ ‘exciting opportunities’! Maybe it’s just me, but please just don’t; your friends, family and wallet will thank you. (more on the pros & cons of MLM HERE ).

2. Online Tutor

Now I homeschooled my daughter (thanks to my online business), and I used some wonderful online tutors, but they worked incredibly hard. They are stuck in a ‘time for money’ cycle with no scalability. Parents are constantly changing time slots and it’s a very crowded market to stand out in.

3. Real Estate Investor

How many of us have this dream - I know I did. The harsh reality is that although it’s potentially lucrative, real estate investing requires significant upfront capital, a strong understanding of the market, a great deal of stress, often having to wait for expensive trades-people to renovate and the ability to weather periods of no income or tenant issues. Not for me thanks!

4. AirBnB your Home

Now you might enjoy strangers in your home, but having to play my A-game with rude and often ignorant visitors is not my bag. And I certainly don’t want them around my girls. Then to clean up after them and depend on them to grade your hospitality after a menopause meltdown, no thanks. Oh, and again - no option for scaling and no income when you are away or want your home back.

5. At Home Daycare or Pet sitter

Other people’s kids or animals = RUN AWAY BRAVELY!

No location freedom, no time freedom, dealing with parents of kids or ‘fur babies’, strict legislation - need I say more!

6. Online Coach

So, this is getting more into my ball park, and something I had some success with for a while. But unless you know how to build some really great systems, understand digital marketing and creating courses (all of which I do since up-skilling myself), you will still find yourself trading time for money. Motivating clients remotely is not easy and it's extremely difficult to be 'seen' - competition is HUGE!

7. Tech support Advisor

If you have tech skills, offering support from home can seem straightforward, but this role can involve erratic hours and complex problem-solving that goes beyond typical IT knowledge. Additionally, maintaining up-to-date certifications can be costly and time-consuming and often dealing with irate customers is not easy. Nope.

8. Influencing

Doesn’t it just scream exhausting & competitive and the need to be constantly ‘shiny’. Now if you like sharing your life on social media all day long, if you can deal with the haters and you love putting yourself up for constant scrutiny, go for your life.

I tried this for a while in the health and fitness space, but it’s not for me or my hot flushes! I choose to jump on my socials now and again, but working online definitely does not mean you have to splash yourself all over social media, thank heavens!

9. Online Store

Starting an online store can be thrilling, but managing inventory, handling customer service, and navigating the complexities of shipping and returns can quickly become a full-time job. Plus, with stiff competition, you'll need a unique selling proposition that truly stands out. Definitely no freedom here (unless you fully understand how to properly set up a Print on Demand or Dropshipping biz - all of which I learned how to do when I invested in the right education!)

10. Absolutely Anything you see Online that Promises 'Cash Now or Easy Money' or Sold by a 16 Year Old GURU Standing infront of a Lambo/Jet/Speedboat/Palm Tree/Penthouse Suite!

Escape the Pyramid Trap: Why Affiliate Marketing is the breakthrough 'home business' success model for time strapped parents (who don't want to 'recruit their friends' or splash themselves all over social media!)

How many people do you avoid in the playground, at the bar, or in a coffee shop because you know that any conversation with them will always lead into a pitch for their Multi-level Marketing (MLM) products? I was determined to work from home so I could finally be there to be the mum my girls deserved. MLM seemed like the obvious choice to make some money alongside a Post-Natal Bootcamp business I was also trying to run. Affiliate Marketing – The Bad

Competition: Affiliate marketing is becoming a very popular way to earn income from home, which means that there can be a lot of competition in some niches. This can make it difficult to stand out and make sales, but with the right training, it is easier than you'd think (I'm living proof!)

No Control over the Product: As an affiliate marketer, you don't have control over the product or service you're promoting. This means that if the product doesn't meet the customer's expectations, it can reflect poorly on you as the affiliate marketer. It’s therefore important to pick your products and companies carefully and even better - set up multiple income streams!

Commission Cuts: Some companies may reduce the commission rate for their affiliate marketers over time, which can impact your earnings potential. Again, it's all about doing your research and promoting companies you have used, that you love and that you trust.

Fluctuating Income: Your income as an affiliate marketer can fluctuate depending on the performance of the product you're promoting, changes in the market, and other factors.

Affiliate Marketing - The Ugly

Many businesses offer poor returns, no resources for their affiliates, no community, and no support. Affiliate Marketing is a booming opportunity, and because of that there are many scams promising that you can get rich quick or make money overnight; spoiler - you can’t!

Multi-Level Marketing - The Good

Flexibility: MLM offers a flexible schedule, allowing individuals to work on their own terms and choose their own hours, making it a great option for people who want to work part-time or as a side hustle.

Low start-up costs: MLM typically requires low start-up costs compared to other business opportunities, making it accessible for people who cannot afford to invest in a traditional business.

Potential for high income: MLM offers the potential to earn high income, as earnings are not limited to the commissions on personal sales, but also from the commissions on the sales made by the people in your downline.

Personal development: MLM often provides training and support for personal development and entrepreneurship, allowing individuals to develop their skills and knowledge in marketing, sales, and business.

Social networking: MLM provides opportunities for social networking, allowing individuals to meet new people and build relationships.

MLM – The Bad

Over promise, under deliver: MLM’s are notorious for promising big rewards but delivering little in the way of actual earnings. In fact, most people who join MLMs end up losing money rather than making it (me!) The vast majority of people who join MLMs make little or no money, and those who do earn something often earn very little.

Pressure to Recruit: To make money in an MLM, you need to recruit others to join your team. This can create a lot of pressure to constantly sell the opportunity to others, which can put a strain on your personal relationships. It can also lead to a focus on recruitment over product sales, which can be damaging to the reputation of the company.

Costly Inventory: Many MLMs require you to purchase inventory in order to sell products. This can be expensive, and it's often difficult to sell all the inventory you've purchased.

Limited Control: As an MLM distributor, you are at the mercy of the company's decisions. You have little control over the products, the marketing, or the pricing. This can be frustrating if you have a vision for how you want to run your business.

Reputation: MLM has a negative reputation due to the history of some companies engaging in fraudulent practices, making it difficult for some people to trust the legitimacy of MLM businesses.

Drop Out: MLM has a high attrition rate, with many participants dropping out after a short time due to the difficulty of making sales or recruiting new participants. You will have to constantly train, support, motivate and recruit team members to stay profitable.
Pyramid structure: MLM has a pyramid style structure, with only a few people at the top earning significant income, while the majority of participants earn little or nothing.

MLM - The Ugly

For me, the biggest ‘ugly’ was just the constant pressure to meet targets, to ‘compete’, to recruit, and to ‘sell’ to my personal network of friends and family over and over

**I was extremely fortunate to have the opportunity of working with an Intern from the University of Lancaster. She was an incredible asset to me, and this article goes to prove that Affiliate Marketing really is an opportunity for anyone who is looking for the freedom and satisfaction of digital entrepreneurship!

Are you a student looking to boost your income, pay off student loans, or cover rent—all from the comfort of your home and with the flexibility to set your own work schedule? Balancing studies and work can be difficult, but with the accessibility of affiliate marketing it’s easier that you might think.

WHAT in the world is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is like being a middle person for products or services you love. You promote them to others through your website, social media, blog, YouTube or other channels using URL links. When people buy through those links, you earn a commission, essentially getting money for recommending things you believe in.

What are the BENEFITS of affiliate marketing for students?

1. Potential for Passive Income

Passive income is money you earn regularly with minimal effort or active involvement, often generated from assets or activities set up to run automatically. So, once you establish an affiliate link & set up your platform to promote the product or service of choice, you can start earning money in your sleep, LITERALLY!

HOWEVER, that is not to say that effort isn’t required. Let’s not sugarcoat it. How an Injured PT learned the Ultimate ‘Work From Home’ Secret!

My back first ‘went’ in 2013. That’s when my fitness business started heading downhill. As a Personal Trainer and bootcamp instructor, I used to carry out some work from home, but it was very much ‘trading my time for money’ when clients came to train with me. I’m going to open your eyes to a whole new work from home idea called Affiliate Marketing. It helped me transform my life, and finally pulled me out of the pain filled, mental health hole that I fell into for a few years.

Imposter Syndrome & Online Training

It was during the years that I was somewhat ‘lost’ that I first discovered the idea of taking my fitness business online. I loved the idea of working online as we then began a chaotic 4 year period where we moved house 4 times! The thought that I could take my fitness business online and work remotely with clients was a revelation (and this was before the Pandemic). The programme I initially invested in showed me everything I needed to be an online PT. It was brilliant and I loved to learn these new online skills.

The trouble is though, I no longer felt like a good coach; how could I train others when I was still in pain physically and mentally. To be fair, I developed a bunch of programmes and had some success delivering them, and even though I got great results for my clients and received lovely testimonials, the imposter syndrome was real! And by now, we were fully renovating our new property – a listed building.

Just as we embarked on our renovations, I came across a great course about setting up an online business I loved, that didn’t require me to have any of my own products or courses (or splash myself all over social media!) I’d actually seen a similar one the year before and dismissed it, but this time, something drew me in, it looked genuinely possible.

Learning how to Work from Home as an Affiliate Marketer

Despite being a sucker for a shiny object, I was still hugely sceptical of a potential scam. I also had some fear about my technical abilities, could someone my age actually set up an online business? Would I need to be splashing myself all over Social Media? (Turns out, not all all!) The course was such great value and refundable though, so it seemed like a no-brainer to at least check out what was possible online, so I could make an informed choice.

The training was superb and after engaging with some coaches and the community I could see it was completely legit. It wasn’t long before I went ‘all in’ to set up an affiliate marketing business and to use the education to re-energise my fitness business.

Full disclosure – my partner wasn’t happy with my investment, he thought it was another one of my ‘shiny objects’ and that I’d never see a return on my investment.

Too many rabbits……

I guess he knew me well, because despite having all the support and training at my fingertips, I just couldn’t make it work. The thing is, I was doing all the project management on our home as well as being chief decorator. As we were renovating, we were living in a tiny flat and I was driving 45 mins each way to the girl’s schools, so I was chief taxi driver. I was also working free for a friend who let me use some of her office space, and I was also working to build my online fitness business, whilst also thinking I could set up an affiliate marketing business (I’d chosen the Affiliate Marketing route, as this was the quickest and easiest way to start earning a good income). Talk about trying to catch multiple rabbits!!

Mentally and physically I wasn’t in a great place, but the chase continued.

And, of course, I continued to fail!

We finally moved in, but having run out of funds and unable to complete a number of jobs in the house, it wasn’t the celebration we’d hoped for. We had no kitchen, no garden and no carpets! Then the pandemic hit. I was getting a little traction as on online coach (using the new training I’d invested in), but now every PT in the world jumped online and most of them were doing stuff for free! So I continued to flounder around with both my online businesses, whilst doing all my ‘mum’ stuff (and some additional family stuff, I’m not going to go into) so still those rabbits were frolicking free in the fields, waving their fingers at me!

My mental health was taking a battering, I was drinking too much, I’d lost any enthusiasm for training as most things just hurt, and all this time I hadn’t appreciated the chaos menopause was having until hot flushes and night sweats left me truly wrecked (that’s a whole other story!!)

In all of this, I continued to subscribe to the incredible community of online entrepreneurs and coaching & training resources I had access to, as I just knew I was in the right place. I could see the success others were having in their ‘work from home jobs’ and knew I could do it too, somehow. And then, my back ‘went’ again. This time, the pain was so bad I ended up horizontal for 9 weeks. I was in excruciating pain. I couldn’t sit, I could barely stand, my left leg felt like it was on fire. The only slight relief came from lying on my side.

That’s when I finally decided to ‘park’ my fitness business for a while.

I used those 9 weeks to get stuck into the training I had invested in and really learn how to be a successful Affiliate Marketer.

Lying on my side, I had my 1-2-1 calls with some incredible coaches.

Lying on my side, I wrote a blog post.

Lying on my side, I set up a Google Ad to that blog post.

7 days after setting up that ad, whilst I was open water swimming (having had 2 spinal block injections) I made my first sale through affiliate marketing.

6 months later I had my first ever 5 figure month – with just that same single blog post.

I’ve spent years chasing 2 ‘business’ rabbits, but having been forced to focus on just the one, I can now proudly say I’m a successful (high ticket) affiliate marketer! (you can see some of my high ticket commissions in the screenshot below).

No more trading time for money.

I have income being generated 24/7 through the systems I have in place, and I now have the time to focus some attention back to my fitness business. Having now learnt how to effectively and successfully work from home, I’m not trading time for money with coaching any more. Much as I’ve loved it, I’m loving the freedom that working online brings me, more! I have digital health and fitness resources (including some on menopause!) that having created once, will generate a passive income using the digital marketing skills I have learned through the training.

I can finally pay off the loan I took out when I decided to invest in myself.
I bought some new carpets!!

And we are sticking with our second-hand kitchen a while longer, because I’m taking the family on a cruise this year!

Take Control of Your Future: Follow These 7 Proven Steps to Launch Your Affiliate Marketing Journey.

If you’ve found this blog, that tells me you are someone who wants more out of life. You’re someone who wants to spend more time with family and not have to ask a boss for time off. It tells me you have dreams, but don’t know how to make them a reality and it tells me you know enough to Google ‘How to Start Affiliate Marketing’, but are not sure how to actually get started or what’s involved? And if you are anything like I was, you’re probably (and quite legitimately) super sceptical of scams and all the BS you hear about affiliate marketing.

I’d never actually heard of it, when I stumbled across the concept a few years ago. I needed to find a way to work from home so I could spend more time with my kids, and be the mum I’d promised to be when I left the Military. You’re about to discover not only the steps involved in getting started, but I’m going to share the exact same free training, that I stumbled on, which ultimately led me to creating a life where I don’t have to ask anyone for time off to spend with my family.

So……… when was the last time you watched a great movie or had a brilliant meal out?

Fab – you’re almost there! This is how to start affiliate marketing. Find a product you love, tell others about it, and get paid if someone buys it. Clearly, there are a few more working parts in between, but in a nutshell, this is how to start affiliate marketing.

Back to the restaurant….. (this is my Mum & Dad at our fave pizza place in Carlsbad, CA.)

Now imagine you’ve had that brilliant meal, and you ask the owner for a code-word that you could tell your friends. Now every time your friends have a meal and use that code-word when they book, the owner will give you a % of their bill, and it won’t cost your friend any extra money at all. This commission-based business is how affiliate marketing works. The owner is reaching new clientele through you, that they have not had to market to (I think Pizza Port owes me a few $$ !! (not an affiliate link!))

This example above is clearly a basic one, so how do we start to make the big bucks and turn this income generator into a business that could ultimately give you time and financial freedom? It’s time to jump online friends. The place where billions of people are hanging out and spending trillions of $£$£$£$£

It’s exactly the same: find products and companies you love and get paid when you refer people to them. More and more businesses are setting up affiliate programmes to enable their products to be seen by a wider group of people. How do you think the top influencers earn so much? When you click a link on their social media or website, they’ll be getting paid (if you actually buy the product!). If like me, you have absolutely no tech skills, and the thought of setting all the ‘stuff’ up is scary, then investing in the education to learn how to do it right from the start will save you a whole ton of time and money!

In this article, we are going to look at the First 7 Steps I believe are essential when you want to know How to Start Affiliate Marketing, including how I started (I’m now a ‘top 3’ earner for my fave High Ticket Affiliate Marketing product)

How to Start Affiliate Marketing – Step 1: Be a Product of the Product

My biggest tip has to be to only market things you have bought and LOVE! Maybe it’s my Military background (23 years in the Royal Air Force), but Integrity is a cornerstone of my life. I will only ever recommend a product, that I am a product of – something I have used and that has made my life better!

Many people start an Affiliate Marketing Business searching for and marketing High Ticket Affiliate Products that they haven’t even used themselves, just because they’ll earn more. However, if you haven’t learned how to set up the right systems first or if that company doesn’t have a good affiliate programme and if you haven’t bough the product itself, you could be wasting a lot of time and money before you make it work. Personally, I want to have a relationship with my prospects and be able to honestly chat with them about the product if they reach out with questions. I became a product of THIS PRODUCT as it was the one that started to show me how to become a successful affiliate marketer.

How to Start Affiliate Marketing – Step 2: What do you LOVE?

Before you even start to think about the how, why, where, what, and when, of starting an affiliate business, I want you to think about the things you love doing. Are you a keen cyclist, runner, reader, photographer, cook, entrepreneur, swimmer, moviegoer, knitter, or animal lover? Are you passionate about the environment, politics, community, travel, the outdoors, charity, or family?

I’m passionate about all the things above, except maybe knitting & politics!

Do me a favour – stop reading and write your passions down now… I’ll wait!

Now think about the ‘things’ associated with those passions. Courses, events, holidays, gadgets, gizmos, clothing and accessories; these are the products you could build an affiliate business around. Wouldn’t you rather build a website, blog, YT channel, Pinterest board, Instagram account or FB group around the things you love? It’s so easy to see the insincerity of marketers who are just looking at the bottom line. When you love what you do, people start to know, like, and trust you, and are then more likely to buy anything you recommend (quick caveat – you do not need to be posting on social media all day/or at all, if that’s not your thing (in the free training you’ll find out how to market without the need to put your face all over socials)).

How to Start Affiliate Marketing – Step 3: Who are you talking to?

When you start affiliate marketing, it’s important to think about who you are trying to reach. One of the first exercises you should consider is figuring out who your ideal customer is. This activity forms the foundation of the course I started with. If you try to market to everyone, your message will be too generic. Most people start with themselves. If you are a middle-aged parent, my messaging is working! If you’re not, it just shows you how effective a good message can be outside of your target ‘demographic’ – after all, most products can be used by most people!

How to Start Affiliate Marketing – Step 4: What do they need?

Your job is to be a problem solver. People ask friends or family and jump online when they are looking for a solution. With this step it’s your job to communicate how the problem they have, can be solved with the product you are marketing. Again, with complete integrity. I would not market anything I wouldn’t give to my mum! Through placing an ad or through the list you have started to build with people who know, like, and trust you, you can put the solution in front of them.

How you communicate that problem and solution—with knowledge, empathy, and sincerity—will ultimately lead to your prospect ignoring or buying!

And don’t forget, the best thing about affiliate marketing is the fact that YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAVE A PRODUCT – no stock to buy and post, no course to build, no buildings to maintain, no staff to worry about, all you are doing is putting a solution (in the form of an affiliate hyperlink) in front of the person with a problem to solve (for more pro’s & cons of Affiliate Marketing – check out this blog post).

How to Start Affiliate Marketing – Step 5: How are you going to reach them?

The next thing to consider is, how are you actually going to ‘get in front’ of the people you want to help. This is why the power of the internet is so incredible. You have access to just about THE WHOLE WORD online. But, you might as well be stuck in the desert if you don’t get your message right. This is why it’s so important to learn how to do it the right way! You can have multiple ‘outlets’, but when you are starting out, KISS (Keep It Stupidly Simple!). Choose something you are happy with and start there.

Love Instagram? Start a <<insert thing you love to do>> channel.

Already got a ton of Facebook friends? Perfect, set up a page on there.

Love to write? Brilliant, start a blog.

Love creating videos? Awesome, jump onto YouTube.

I’m always all about “How would this look if it was easy” so pick something you love and pick a platform you are comfortable with.

Affiliate Marketing – Step 6: How quickly do you want to grow?

This step is important. Clearly, without an audience, you will not have a business, and we are here to build a business, yes? If you have read this far, I’m assuming this is something you are interested in! There are 2 routes to take at this point.

Organic and Paid

Organic means that you start putting your content out on your chosen platform and basically rely on ‘the universe’ (otherwise known as the algorithms!) to show your stuff to the people you are hoping to reach. If you already have a good following, this could be enough to get started and even sustain your business. This is basically free, and whilst most people would love for their stuff to go viral or be able to market at no cost, even the biggest ‘stars’ struggle to get consistent results. And to be honest most people just don’t have the time or the inclination to be putting themselves ‘out there’ all day!

Paid is just that. You pay the platform to show your content to an audience you choose. How many people see that content will depend on how well you have chosen your audience and how much you are willing to pay. This is quite an art to get right (which is why I invested in the training to get me there quicker!) But when you do get it right, it’s magic! It’s very easy to scale and quickly be earning an income 24/7 from whatever content you have an ‘ad’ attached to. And the best part – no need to be putting yourself out all over social media!

Affiliate Marketing -Step 7: Do it RIGHT from the START!

Affiliate Marketing is a growing business model and to that end, there are countless courses out there and numerous ‘get rich quick’ scams too. Like most things in life, you get what you pay for! If I’m honest, I was quick to chase shiny objects with empty promises, and I wasted a ton of money and time. Eventually (and with some skepticism—my ex-military BS detector is always on high alert!) I decided to check out some free training recommended through a YouTube ad I saw. I don’t know what made me go for it, but it just seemed to ‘stand apart’ from everything else I was seeing. Through the free training, I was able to see all the different opportunities to work online (not just Affiliate Marketing) and from there, it really was a no-brainer to check out the programmes on offer.

Starting a New Career

Is there life after 40? Or 50, or 60? Yes, yes and yes!

Of course there is, in fact, I reckon it’s over 40 that life starts getting better. We tend to worry less about pleasing others, about conforming or about so much of the trivia that seemed to dog earlier years. Like so many things in life, it’s never too late and it’s certainly not too late to be starting a new career at 40 and beyond!. If you still haven’t found that thing that makes you leap out of bed in the morning, then don’t stop until you do. There are thousands of ideas and resources to help you, so I implore you, stop ‘settling’ for life; get out there and find your purpose. (This is who and what inspired me).

I know it all sounds a bit ‘happy clappy‘ this ‘purpose’ thing, but I so believe each one of us has something to offer this amazing world, to make it a better place, to make others happy or to pay something forward. By 40 and beyond, you will have a mountain of experience to draw upon, to share, to guide and to learn from and you can earn an income from this! Discovering your purpose might be something that will take a good bit of ‘work’ to do or it might be something you’ve known all along. It might even be something you discover by accident when you take a different path, talk to someone new, go somewhere different, catch a later train (did you ever watch Sliding Doors?) or discover in a blog!

When you discover your purpose, it is your responsibility (to yourself and to others that care for you) to follow it, no matter what your age and starting a new career with that purpose driving you is easier than you might think.

Your current situation

It might be that you fell in to something when you left school, college or Uni and you have just remained in your comfort zone ever since – but that does not mean that that is where you should stay, in fact, if you are ‘comfortable’ you will never be growing (and for my money, if I’m not growing, I’m not happy). It might be that you have been raising and running a family, getting temporary work or never had to work, but whatever your current situation, if you are thinking about starting a new career at 40, 50 and beyond, you must not settle for anything that does not inspire you.

Starting a new career sounds pretty daunting at any age, let alone past 40, but it is rapidly becoming a normal progression in this ever changing world for someone to have several jobs throughout their working life or even at the same time – multiple income streams is definitely a more secure option! As traditional jobs fall by the wayside, people that don’t keep up will be out of work quicker than you can say “Dole Queue” (would have been fun to be in this one though!). It’s crazy, but there are hundreds of jobs around today that didn’t even exist 20, 10 or even 5 years ago.

Here’s a few jobs that never or barely existed 10 years ago….

App developer
Content creators
Social media managers
Sustainability managers
Data scientist
Cloud computing specialist
Driverless car engineer
Uber driver
Millenial Generation expert!
Drone operator

The latest studies are suggesting that 2/3 of kids in primary schools today will be doing jobs we can’t even conceive of at the moment – crikey! So if you are thinking about a starting a new career, especially one that creates freedom in your life, with an untapped income potential and joining what is known as the ‘Modern Wealthy’, it’s all about not being left behind. That means getting Online!

The digital world is moving pretty fast, and it’s leaving a lot of people in it’s wake, but if you are prepared to invest some time and effort into your future by learning some new skills, it’s so much easier than you would think to start leveraging the power of the internet. You could stick your head in the sand, perhaps sign up to a soul crushing MLM ‘opportunity’ (been there!) or trawl though sites like Indeed, trying to fins a ‘job’ that still means you have to ask a boss for time off in the school holidays, or you could ‘earn while you learn’ in the online world and build something you love that could pull in cash flow every day on autopilot.

The pain of staying the same

So, if you are thinking about starting a new career at 40 and beyond, or adding an additional source of income, learning to take your passion online is the only smart choice. Now I hadn’t planned to look for a new career; since leaving the RAF I thought I had found my purpose in Personal Training. However, as much as I love training and am hugely satisfied helping others to improve their lives through health and fitness, I’ve realised that my purpose is so much bigger than that. To be honest, I’d really dug myself into a hole of self doubt, self criticism and unworthiness (I’ll save that story for another blog!!) before I discovered I could do what I loved without compromising my physical and mental health. I’d suffered years of pain after back to back injuries and I nearly let life crush me. I knew I had to get me a spade and dig myself out and that’s when I met Landria. Talk about INSPIRED!!!I I knew I was in the right place (despite initial scepticism) and after getting stuck in to the education I soon launched Laptopmums and then took my fitness business online.

Remembering that pain, and having seen how others like Landria have succeeded late in life, gives me the drive to help others rise out of similar holes. I’ve spoken to so many women who are ‘settling’, who are in pain, who are unfulfilled, who are unsatisfied or just ‘meh‘. Women who are run ragged juggling, jobs, kids, husbands, admin, cleaning and cooking. Women who are just ‘waiting’ for a good time to start their own business, take a training course or hire a cleaner (I wrote a bit about the perfect moment in my last blog HERE). These women aren’t necessarily unhappy and often have a loving family, but just feel that something is missing or that they are capable of so much MORE. So at the grand old age of 53, here I am pushing out of my comfort zone getting to grips with the Digital Age and discovering my bigger purpose. It’s not easy – nothing worth having is, but I’m laying the foundations for 2 businesses that I love , building digital assets that bring in income 24/7/365.

My purpose

I love my business GO Health and Fitness, I’m proud of it and I love my clients, but I now know I can help my people not only to lose weight, move better and get healthier, but to take it a few steps (or a giant leap) further to develop themselves personally and professionally too. If health and fitness is your goal, I’m certainly your girl and what I have learned from my online community has driven me to serve my clients from an online platform which enables me to work with clients all over the world (from anywhere in the world!)
